AMPLIFY IMMERSIVE
Description of pilot
STAGE DIVING aims to address challenges in live performances through a pilot project exploring virtual and augmented reality stages and remote performances. The initiative is guided by the research question: How can digital technology provide audiences with fulfilling live concert experiences without the artists’ physical presence? The term “fulfilling” is the key, as while watching a live performance on a screen is possible, it often feels inferior due to the lack of emotional engagement between artists and audiences.
The pilot will feature an innovative “immersive stage” designed with AMPLIFY IMMERSIVE. Festivalgoers equipped with XR headsets will gather around an “empty” stage, where they will witness musicians performing live from a remote location, digitally projected onto the stage in real time. A state-of-the-art PA sound system will ensure high-quality audio, complementing the immersive visuals.
This revolutionary concept allows audiences to experience a visually and sonically captivating performance. The holographic projection of the band, performing live, will be so lifelike that it creates the illusion they are physically present, sharing the stage with the audience. The possibilities extend beyond this. For example, bands could collaborate with remote musicians during a live show, making it easier for local acts to feature special guest performers.
Moreover, AMPLIFY IMMERSIVE seeks to create real-time connections between artists and audiences, fostering a sense of unity and shared presence despite physical distance. Audience members could interact with the band through virtual applause, reactions, or messages, enabling a dynamic performance that responds to the crowd’s energy and mood.
The system avoids latency issues by ensuring musicians perform together in real time, but as technology evolves, it could support live collaborations between artists in different locations. The pilot may also test this possibility by leveraging the high-speed Géant network, with a node located in Pisa (IT), to evaluate the feasibility of real-time remote performances.
This pilot has the potential to redefine live music experiences, combining cutting-edge technology with creative innovation to bring artists and audiences closer together, regardless of distance.
